The movie was about a family that spends their summers on a beautiful mountain resort in Switzerland. The summer is one of the most important times in the year because it plays an integral part in their lives. This is when they get to reconnect with one another and regain the happiness and hope they lost during the winter months. This was how I felt when I got out of bed at 5:30am to get ready for my first day back at work after having my second baby. It was our last chance to spend time together before we would both be heading off into our respective directions and, despite knowing how hard life could sometimes be, we were determined not to let that happen again. We had to make the most of the moment. What better way to do that than on top of a mountain? There’s something about moving around in nature that makes me feel like I’m reconnecting with my old self, my new self and everyone else’s new self all at once. There is an energy that doesn’t exist anywhere else. It feeds off itself, spreading positivity along with it. A new consciousness wafts through you so you feel lighter, happier, more alive… less stressed out… less tired… more in touch with what makes life worth living. It was pouring when we arrived so we got out of the car and made a mad dash for cover under some trees. We noticed that some of our neighbours had gone a little further on and were sheltering under a different kind of umbrella… a green umbrella… a green umbrella with an owl painted on it. It was clearly theirs. I noticed that they were all looking at the view from their spot and I wanted to join them, but I didn’t want to come as late as they had already been! The light had changed too. In fact, it had changed quite a lot during the last hour or so and some white discolouration around the edges of everything made it look as if some sort of chemical reaction was going on. You know that feeling you get when you find yourself missing something that isn’t even work related? I had missed the snow. For all of its coldness, snow was the one time of year when everything seemed to be in its place. Where there was beauty, there was also fear. Where there were dangers, there were also thrills. Where there were risks, there were also promises… promises of a new beginning and renewed hope for next winter. I wanted the snow back. The snow is a character in this movie. It is entirely different from any other character in the movie and it requires quite a bit of attention and care so you can fully appreciate how it affects the way everyone else is feeling. It would be impossible to miss it even if you tried! I felt like I was watching my life play out in front of me the moment we got there. But nothing was going to spoil our time together and we decided to forget all about our troubles and just laugh and play around instead.
